Cycloid launches Stack Versioning

Cycloid launches Stack Versioning to give platform teams the power to ship faster without breaking production

New capability brings semantic versioning to IDP service catalogs, letting platform teams ship faster without forcing upgrades on production

KUBECON, AMSTERDAM, March 24th Cycloid, the Internal Developer Platform (IDP) company, has today launched Stack Versioning, a major update to its service catalog, that gives platform teams and application developers independent control over the infrastructure upgrade lifecycle for the first time, ensuring that end-users can upgrade at the right time and stack maintainers can make changes safely.

Gartner projects that by 2026, 80% of large software engineering organisations will have dedicated platform engineering teams as enterprises look to scale developer self-service without sacrificing governance. Yet the tooling to manage the lifecycle of reusable infrastructure stacks is lagging behind, with configuration drift, forced migrations, and the fear of breaking stable production components amongst the most cited pain points for platform teams. As AI-assisted development accelerates the pace at which infrastructure configurations are generated and deployed, the risk of ungoverned stack sprawl is only growing.

Stack Versioning introduces a more flexible way for platform teams and developers to work together, while ensuring that production environments continue to rely only on certified and stable versions of infrastructure and services. In practice, teams can now run what is effectively a sandbox sprint by creating a feature branch of a stack, spinning up a test component, and iterating as much as needed without ever touching the version that the rest of the organisation depends on. Organisations with a mix of legacy and modern systems can support both without compromise, keeping long-running applications on stable versions that are known to work, while newer services move forward and take advantage of updated capabilities.

“Platform engineering is about finding the right balance between control and autonomy, but for too long infrastructure stacks have been the one place in the software delivery chain where that balance didn’t exist,” said Benjamin Brial, Founder of Cycloid. “Concerned that a single update could ripple across dozens of production components, teams have long held back improvements or taken on unnecessary risk. The launch of Stack Versioning today changes this dynamic by giving platform teams the confidence to evolve their stacks, and developers the ability to consume reliable infrastructure on a timeline that works for them.”

For teams managing multiple, complex environments, Stack Versioning makes staged rollouts much more straightforward, since a new version can be introduced in staging, tested under real conditions, and only promoted to production when there is confidence that it is ready. The result is that disruption is minimised and teams have more control over how changes are introduced. A new Adoption Dashboard gives an organisation- wide view of which components are running which version, making it straightforward to audit technical debt, plan migrations, and identify who needs to be brought forward.

The release builds on Cycloid’s broader vision for its service catalog, where reusable stacks define infrastructure, services, and workflows that can be shared across the organisation, and with Versioning now in place, these building blocks become easier to manage over time while giving teams the confidence to evolve them safely.
